Shasta Community Health Center - Redding
SCHC is a non-profit, primary health care system based in Redding, serving Shasta and surrounding counties since 1988. The health center provides high quality, compassionate care to specific patient groups such as low income, special-needs patients, the uninsured, and the homeless. A challenge grant of $1.2 million was made by the Foundation in 1999 to help the health center purchase and renovate its current facility.
By 2005 SCHC was so successful in serving the expanding community that it had outgrown its space. The Foundation gave SCHC another challenge grant of $1,000,000 for expansion of the facility, which is now underway. The center is now wrapping up its successful campaign, having reached its goal of raising $3 million in capital and operating dollars for this $6 million capital expansion. The balance of the costs will come from low interest loans.
The expansion will take place in two phases. The first phase will be the redevelopment of a 7,000 square foot building adjacent to the main complex in downtown Redding. Construction for this phase began in late September 2007 and will last about six months. This new area will provide additional clinical space for the Healthcare for the Homeless program and for expanded, integrated mental health and primary care programs.
The second phase of the expansion will begin with the demolition of some non-clinical space at the main center in Redding around January 2008, and then over the next 11 months build out 15,000 square feet of clinical space. This expansion will provide for expanded space for the Urgent Care program of SCHC as well as additional space for specialty care and for a future expanded family medicine teaching program. Overall this expansion will allow SCHC to add several thousand new patients, particularly infants, children and families of low income or who have special needs over the next several years.
